We use our receptive and expressive language skills to communicate effectively with others. Expressive language is about expressing thoughts and ideas effectively and cohesively. Receptive language is about understanding what others say. Receptive and Expressive Language are complex interconnected skills that form reading and writing foundations. It is common for students who struggle with oral language development to demonstrate increased challenges in learning to read and write efficiently.

At Expressive Minds, we strongly believe that every child can meet their communication, language, and literacy goals. We strongly advocate for early access to robust Assistive and Augmented Communication systems (AAC). We also strongly believe there is no one right way to communicate and embrace a total communication approach for our clients with more complex communication needs.
A developmental language disorder (DLD) is a brain difference in which a child past the age of 5 has persistent difficulty with learning, understanding, and using language compared to other kids their age. These persistent difficulties are not explained by other conditions such as cognitive impairment, Autism, hearing loss, or Down Syndrome. It is estimated that 1 in 14 children have DLD.
DLD can impact how individuals understand information, especially academic instruction and directions. It can also impact how they express themselves. It is important to get support early on to help them succeed in school and daily life.
It's common to observe challenges in learning to read, write, and experience social challenges.
